Following a successful collaboration with the BBC in autumn 2000 and spring 2001, the V&A is pleased to announce a third series of lectures to complement Simon Schama's acclaimed BBC programmes. The lectures will feature objects from the Museum's British Galleries 1500-1900, opening in November 2001. The aim of the lectures is to explore the social and cultural dimensions of the period covered by the BBC series.

The lectures will appeal to any member of the public with an interest in history and the arts.


Current lecture series held at the V&A:


The V&A lectures start at 15.00. Tickets are free and can be obtained in the Museum on the day of the lecture. A standard entry fee to the Museum of £5 will apply before 22 November 2001. Entry to the Museum is free for everyone under 18, full-time students, senior citizens, disabled people with facilitators, ES40 holders and all V&A Friends. Being British: Art in Society at the Time of Nelson

John Styles, Head of the V&A, RCA History of Design Course and co-author of the book Design and the Decorative Arts: Britain 1500-1900, published to coincide with the opening of the British Galleries 1500-1900, talks on a porcelain plate made at the Coalport factory and painted by Thomas Baxter in 1806 to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victories.

Gareth Williams, Deputy Curator specialising in 20th century and contemporary design, Furniture, Textiles and Dress Department, V&A, talks on the Ekco AD-65 Bakelite radio designed by Wells Coates in 1932 and other designs form the 1930s.
