  HISTORY OF THE PAINTING

This painting shows the opening ceremony of the Great Exhibition on 1 May 1851. It was painted by Henry Courtney Selous (1803-1890), a painter of panoramic portraits, nature scenes, historic scenes and landscapes. He was based in London and is best known for his large historical paintings.

The painting shows the Archbishop of Canterbury blessing the Exhibition. The Royal Family are surrounded by Commissioners of the Exhibition, government ministers and officials. The 1 May 1851 was declared a national holiday and more than 25,000 people attended the opening.
