Samuel
Morton Peto
(1809-1889) Member of the Finance Committee
Peto helped considerably in the early planning stages of the Great
Exhibition by offering a guarantee of £50,000 for the building.
His early commitment brought in a flood of other contributions and
enabled the building of the Crystal Palace to go ahead. He was subsequently
made one of the Royal Commissioners and advised on all financial
matters.
Peto's
experience as head of a highly successful firm of building and railway
contractors made him a well-qualified treasurer. He was a Member
of Parliament and was made a baronet in 1854.
