Charles
Wentworth Dilke (1810-1869)
Member of the Executive Committee
Dilke was part of the original group chosen by the Royal Society
of Arts to organise the day-to-day running of the Exhibition. In
the early planning stages, he gathered support for the Exhibition
from manufacturing towns such as Manchester and Leeds. Later on,
he helped control the formidable administration needed to bring
the exhibits into place in the building. He declined a knighthood
and any financial reward for his efforts.
Dilke
was editor of the journal The Athenaeum. He worked on later international
exhibitions and was made a baronet in 1862.
