Sir
Stafford Henry Northcote (1818-1887)
Joint Secretary to the Royal Commission
As Secretary to the Royal Commission, Sir Stafford Henry Northcote
was occupied with every detail of the Great Exhibition. He attempted
to resign in 1851 because of the deaths of his father and grandfather
but Prince Albert was unwilling to let him go. His strenuous work
on the Exhibition was said to have contributed to his later poor
health.
Following
the Great Exhibition, Northcote's political career flourished. He
entered the cabinet in 1866, became Chancellor of the Exchequer
in 1874 and Foreign Secretary in 1886.
