John
Henderson
Contractor for the construction
John
Henderson was a partner in the Birmingham firm of railway engineers,
Fox Henderson & Co., who manufactured the cast-iron components of
the Crystal Palace and assembled them on site. The firm was chosen
by the designer of the building, Joseph Paxton. Paxton's design
was a late entry and Fox Henderson managed to calculate the cost
of every pound of iron and inch of glass in little more than week.
Although the initial drawings were rushed, Paxton's plan, as detailed
by Fox Henderson, was the only one to meet all the criteria demanded.
