Thomas
De la Rue (1793-1866)
Juror
Thomas De la Rue acted as deputy chairman of the jury assessing
Class 17 - Paper and Stationery, Printing and Bookbinding. A number
of exhibitors served as jurors; their goods could be exhibited but
were not eligible for prizes.
De la Rue founded the firm of De la Rue & Sons, card and ornamental
papermakers. He introduced several new printing inks, and pioneered
the embossing of cloth bookbindings. He also invented bonnets of
embossed paper. His firm is still famous in the paper trade and
specialises in banknotes and high security printing. At the Exhibition
the company exhibited the first envelope-making machine.
