Contemporary Japan is famed for its innovative textiles. The vitality of the work being produced today owes much to the country's rich traditions of dyeing and weaving. This display explores the work of a number of leading Japanese textile artists who look to historical practices as the starting point for the creation of modern designs. For many of these artists the kimono remains the primary focus of attention, an indication of the potency of this garment as a symbol of Japanese cultural identity. The display features a number of such kimono as well as screens, doorway curtains (noren) and fabric lengths.
