Vivienne Westwood, a designer renowned for creating clothes inspired by historical styles of dress, first introduced togas on her 'Nostalgia of Mud' collection (1982). Originally designed for women, men such as Steve Strange and Philip Sallon began wearing them on the London club scene in the early 1980's.
After Westwood
launched her menswear label 'Man' in 1996, togas have featured regularly in
her menswear collections.
