When she was nearly fifty, Julia Margaret Cameron began to practice photography and became friends with prominent figures from both the sciences and the arts, including poet Lord Alfred Tennyson, scientist Sir John Herschel and painter G.F. Watts. Cameron regarded her photography as a creative art rather than a hobby and exhibited and sold her work. She was particularly adept in using long exposures, soft focus and atmospheric lighting conditions to create powerful portraits and allegories. She is recognised as one of the most experimental and influential photographers of the nineteenth century. |
