" This is a self portrait but it's also a very confusing image and I think that's why I like it. Normally when you look at something like this in real life, if you are actually standing there your brain edits what your eyes are seeing so that you can understand the relationship of the planes and the reflections and the mirror images etcetera and make sense out of it. But I think what Friedlander has done here is that he has allowed the camera to record exactly what is there, which is of course what a camera does, and he has left it up to us then to unravel the image, and it becomes quite a challenge. "
