INTRODUCTION
Earth and Fire:
Italian Terracotta Sculpture from Donatello to Canova
Through their masterful control of material and a superb sense of artistry,
Italian sculptors have explored the versatility of terracotta to create
some of the most alluring and expressive sculptures in the history of
art.
Earth and Fire is an unprecedented exhibition which examines the full
range of Italian terracotta sculpture between 1400 and 1800, including
works by Ghiberti, Donatello, Bernini and Canova. A landmark event, the
exhibition provides a unique opportunity to assess the wide variety of
roles played by terracotta sculpture.
For the first time, Earth and Fire will bring together pieces from around
Europe and the USA including drawings, terracotta models and celebrated
finished works, illustrating the changes between a sculptors initial
concept and the final result.
Earth and Fire: Italian
Terracotta Sculpture from Donatello to Canova has been organised by the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in association with the Victoria and Albert
Museum and Parnassus Foundation. Generous funding is provided by Parnassus
Foundation courtesy of Jane and Raphael Bernstein.
