Context

In 1957 Terence Conran founded the Conran Design Group, a design consultancy which also manufactured and marketed furniture for commercial and domestic use. The furniture produced was simple and modern but Conran felt that there were no appropriate retailers for it, so in 1964 he founded Habitat Ltd incorporating the company Habitat Designs Ltd. The first shop opened at 77 Fulham Road, London. Habitat sold its own furniture and household items as well as pieces by other manufacturers (especially French, Italian and Scandinavian). Conran's vision was to design and market simple, smart and reasonably priced furniture and household goods in a stylish open-plan store, in order to make shopping for the home an enjoyable and impulsive activity among the fashionable young. The success of the first shop enabled him to open a second shop on Tottenham Court Road, London and by the end of the 1960s there were five branches. Other stores opened in France and the USA in the early 1970s. By 1994 there were over 80 stores throughout the world. Habitat introduced its first catalogue in 1966 and in 1969 a mail-order service was launched. In 1981 Habitat was floated on the Stock Exchange and in 1982 it merged with Mothercare to form Habitat/Mothercare Group plc, which then merged with British Home Stores in 1986 to form Storehouse. In 1992 Storehouse sold Habitat UK and Habitat France to the Stichting Ingka which continues to operate the companies as separate divisions under the Habitat name.

The newly re-mastered prints were premiered in London at the National Film Theatre in February 1994 and then toured the country from March to May. Habitat also commissioned, in conjunction with the British Film Institute and the First Film Foundation a new short film called 'Marooned' which also toured the country. Lupton Morton was a private company based at Wallingford, Oxfordshire, which began by manufacturing contract furniture and later moved over into the domestic market. It produced simple modern furniture similar to that sold by Habitat and had a thriving mail order business. In 1969 Ryman Conran bought Lupton Morton with the intention of merging the Lupton Morton catalogue with that of Habitat in order to allow Habitat to expand into the mail order market on a large scale.

Main chronological sub-series, 1964-1998
Extent: 90 files

This sub-series has been constructed partly from a series of volumes found at Habitat Head Office and subsequently rehoused in solander boxes by Ben Weaver in 1993, and partly from a series of files sent to the archive from the Habitat Press Office in 1995.
The volumes (AAD/1995/12/15/1-77) cover the years 1964-1992 (with a gap between September 1985 and December 1987) and the files (AAD/1995/12/15/78-96) cover the years 1993 - June 1994 and also October 1990.

Press Office folders, 1982-1990
Extent: 85 files

This material was found in clear plastic folders arranged chronologically in box files. The chronological arrangement has been maintained, but the clear plastic folders have been replaced with archival wallets for conservation reasons.
Each folder concerns a different promotional or internal event and usually contains a press pack or press releases. Sometimes they also contain invitations, mailing lists, photographs, name labels and other material used at press shows and leaflets and balloons used for promotional purposes.
N.B. All the balloons have been removed from the folders and placed in a box at the end for conservation reasons.
