Sidney William Hamlyn (1883-1973) applied to train as an architect at the Regent's Park Polytechnic, London, but was unsuccessful. In 1900 he started working for the company Faraday and Sons, a lighting manufacturer and retailer in London. In 1909 he became the chief designer for Best and Lloyd, lighting and metalwork manufacturer and retailer, based in Birmingham. In 1913 he set up his own business in London, called Kerswell, Faulkner and Hamlyn Ltd, which during the First World War manufactured turnbuckles for aeroplanes. The company was not successful and was disbanded in 1919. Hamlyn then went into business with Louis Dernier and Co., lamp and lampshade manufacturers, to form Louis Dernier and Hamlyn Ltd.
Louis Dernier and Hamlyn Ltd designed and patented lighting products in the 1920s which included the Litlux bed lamp and the Neolux lighting range. The Neolux range was developed further during the 1930s and an extensive advertising campaign was undertaken. In November 1931 the company's name was changed to Dernier and Hamlyn Ltd. It exhibited at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition during the 1920s and 1930s. Lighting fittings were sold to retailers such as Heal & Son Ltd, Hyders Ltd, Lyons Ltd, Maple and Co. and Rashleigh Phipps and Co. Major commissions included the design of the lighting for London cinemas and theatres, including the Cambridge Theatre and the Phoenix Theatre, Charing Cross Road, London. Sidney William Hamlyn also designed the lighting for the Opera House in Tunbridge Wells and University College Library, the Victoria Hotel, Northumberland Avenue, and the Wellcome Research Institute in London.
Sidney William Hamlyn married twice and had two sons, Leslie and Sydney William and a daughter, Muriel. Both sons worked for some time in the company, as did his second wife, Louise, née Harrison.
