In 1978 the Arts Council appointed its first Education Liaison Officer with a view to implementing the chartered duty "to develop and improve the knowledge, understanding and practice of the arts".
In 1980 the Education Unit itself was established to cope with increasing demands for advice and guidance from both arts and education bodies. As the unit's budget was increased they were able to expand into directly organised activity and funding for education development projects.
During the 1985/86 re-organisation, the unit was placed within the Planning and Development Department of the Service Division. Finally, it was moved to the Arts Development Division in 1991 where it became one of the Cross-Departmental Units.
This series spans the time from when the unit was initially established through to the period when it operated as a Cross-Departmental Unit.
It contains the majority of the files held by the Education Unit of the Arts Council. There are records relating to the general administration of the unit, such as day files, finance papers and meeting agendas and minutes. There are also records relating to the other Arts Council departments, particular arts forms and various regional bodies.
Some of the records refer to conferences organised by the unit. A number of the files were created through the production of the Education Bulletin publication and there are policy files concerning the development of the new National Curriculum.
Finally, there are also many files relating to the specific schemes and projects which the Education Unit initiated or participated in. Such projects and schemes included Theatre in Education, Jazz in Education, Arts Education, Media and the Curriculum, Dance in Schools and The Arts and Youth Work.
