The Training Unit was established by the Arts Council in the mid-1970s. Initially its efforts were restricted to training in the area of arts administration, however by the 1980s it was beginning to expand its activities, offering a far greater choice of training programmes and administering student bursary schemes.
During the 1985/86 re-organisation, the unit became part of the Planning and Development Department in the Services Division. Then in 1988/89 the unit was merged with Personnel to form the Personnel and Training Department within the Services Division. Further re-organisation in 1991 saw Training leave Personnel to join the Arts Development Division as one of the Cross-Departmental Units.
This series contains the majority of the files held by the Training Unit of the Arts Council. The files span the period from the establishment of the Unit in the mid-1970s through to when it joined the Arts Development Division as a Cross-Departmental Unit.
There are records relating to the general administration of the unit, such as day files, finance papers and meeting agendas and minutes. There are also records relating to the other Arts Council departments, particular arts forms and various regional bodies. Many of the files relate to the unit's various traineeships, training courses, summer schools and bursary awards.
The unit's earliest work surrounded the development of the arts administration courses and these files have been selected for a separate series in view of their extensive nature. They can be found in series ACGB/81.
