This series consists of the original 'Administration Back Files' series as it was maintained by the Arts Council's Secretariat. It contains files on a number of general subjects including; honours, interdepartmental correspondence, nominations for panels and committees, various arts companies and so on. It also contains master copies of the minutes of many panels and committees including: the Advisory Panels on Art, Dance, Drama, Film, Video & Broadcasting, Literature and Music, theYoung People's Theatre Panel, the Community Arts Advisory Committee, the Advisory Committee on Training, theDirectorate, Arts Directorate andManagement Directorate, the New Activities Committee, the Experimental Projects Committee, theTouring Advisory Committee and the Scottish and Welsh Committees and Arts Councils. This series also contains some papers belonging to the Director of Arts Co-ordination.
N.B. The minutes of the Arts Council of Great Britain are kept at ACGB/36 and the minutes of the Executive Committee (1962-1967) are contained within ACGB/46.
The Administration Back Files series appears to have contained most of the Secretariat's filing (excluding Accommodation Back Files) up until 1989 (there is very little material dated 1990 in the series). After that date it seems that filing was done on a more chronological basis with all the files for each year being filed together and kept separate from those for the previous and following years. These files are now kept at ACGB/48.
During the later years in which the Administration Back Files series operated the numbering scheme was not applied with the same vigour and discrepancies do arise.
Some of the earlier files from this series were removed and sent to the Public Record Office prior to the gift of the archive to the Victoria & Albert Museum. These files now form part of series EL2 and EL5, which have also been transferred from the Public Record Office to the Museum.

This series is arranged by original box number.

Access to unpublished material less than 30 years old is subject to the written permission of the Arts Council of England. Apply in the first instance to the Archive of Art and Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
