Paul Bonet binding for Matisse’s Jazz

Paul Bonet was one of the twentieth century’s great binders, both in skill of execution and creativity of design. He began his career as a fashion designer but, influenced by the noted book artist, Paul Legrain, turned to bookbinding. Matisse, the painter and sculptor, also produced several important livres d’artistes.

Completed late in life, Jazz is very evocative of his paintings and demonstrates his love of colour. The binding mirrors the bright and saturated colour of the plates in the book without being repetitive or derivative. Bonet has created a mosaic from variously coloured leathers and the joins between them are finished with consummate skill by delicate fillet gold-tooling.
