Carol singing was a popular custom from medieval times but had begun to decline at the beginning of the 19th century. At the same time there was increasing concern that the songs may be lost and forgotten. Throughout the 1820s and 1830s antiquarians began collecting traditional carols and inexpensive carol sheets became widely available
