Throughout the 1840s Christmas changed from being a mainly adult festival to one where children became central to the celebrations. Fun and games, and drinking and feasting were all important aspects of the celebrations; with the plum pudding, a traditional English steamed pudding, becoming a symbol of seasonal hospitality.
