A Christmas Carol was first published by Chapman and Hall in 1843. In this book Dickens managed to express, through his depiction of Christmas, a number of contemporary social concerns. In December 1853, Dickens performed his first public reading. A Christmas Carol, had been adapted but still took three hours to perform. The story remained in his repertoire thoughout his reading career but was gradually revised down to one and a half hours. |
