Arts of Asia: Korea and Japan

COURSE: This new course introduces the arts of Korea and Japan from 1500–1900. Tuesdays, 13 September – 29 November 2011, 11.00–15.30.
Explore the connections and cultural distinctions between the countries of East Asia as expressed through a range of media, from ceramics, textiles and lacquer to fine paintings and prints. Examine the visual and decorative arts in a range of settings, from the Choson court to the samurai, and study the performance art and theatre of the Edo alongside the vibrancy of life in the entertainment quarters of Japan.
