COURSE: Gain a fresh perspective on one of the most dynamic periods in the history of European art. Thursdays, 15 September 2011 – 12 July 2012 (over 3 terms), 11.00–15.30.
Study the work of visual artists including Chardin, Hogarth, Canova, Turner, Manet and Rodin in the context of wider political and cultural movements and events. Explore Rococo, Neoclassical, Impressionist and early Modernist art and discuss themes such as taste, patronage, exhibitions and the art market. This course covers the fine arts, including painting and sculpture, and also encompasses design, architecture and popular visual culture. Through a programme of lectures and close examination of important objects in the V&A’s collections, trace the complex changes taking place across the visual arts over this two hundred year period.
