FREE LECTURE: Coming from behind: viewing the male nude in Italian Renaissance sculpture. Join Professor Patricia Rubin of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York, and in conversation with Antony Gormley.
The physical placement of sculpture was a matter of public discussion in the Renaissance as was its theoretical position among the arts. By the mid-sixteenth century the comparison with painting had become commonplace, tending to emphasize the pictorial aspects of the sculptor’s art. The reproduction of sculpture in prints also became widespread, establishing modes of seeing both ancient and modern statues that greatly influenced their history and their place in art history. This lecture will explore how conventional viewpoints have limited our experience of sculpture and its full and sometimes surprising significance.
