Established by goldsmith and banker Richard Hoare at the Sign of the Golden Bottle, Cheapside, in 1672, C. Hoare & Co. is the oldest surviving independent bank in Britain.
It is still owned entirely by members of the Hoare family – currently the tenth and eleventh generations – all of whom are direct descendants of Richard. The business has been based in Fleet Street since 1690, and the present building was constructed in 1829 – 1830. Members are invited for a guided tour of the private banking house, which was once home to members of the Hoare family, with the opportunity to view items from their archive collection.
