LUNCHTIME LECTURE: Archivist Nick Smith uses rarely-seen personal accounts and official records to tell the stories of five intrepid agents whose mission was to find and buy the best of world art and design for the V&A.

Henry Cole and Richard Redgrave, who toured Northern Italy in search of Medieval and Renaissance art works, Robert Murdoch Smith who, when not supervising the construction and maintenance of the telegraph route in Iran, was scouring its bazaars for objects, Caspar Purdon Clarke, who rushed to Istanbul to secure pieces from the collection of the British Consul William Wrench, and Charles Wylde, the first V&A curator to travel to China and Korea.
