10 WEEK SHORT COURSE: The history of theatre is a fascinating story of both artistic achievement and changing social history.

Although mainly centred on British theatre this course begins with its origins in Greece and journeys on through Medieval theatre, the coming of the Elizabethan playhouse, Marlowe and Shakespeare, and then the turbulent worlds of Jacobean and Restoration theatre. The spectacular and changing world of Victorian period will be explored and the appearance by the end of the 19th century of the new realism of Ibsen, Chekhov and Shaw before moving on to the C20th and Angry Young Men of 1956.
