EVENING TALK: Join Jung Chang, the best-selling author of Wild Swans and Mao: The Unknown Story, as she discusses her new book about the extraordinary and dramatic life of the Empress Dowager Cixi, the most important woman in Chinese history.

Arriving at the royal palace as the Emperor’s concubine aged 16, Cixi made herself ruler of China after his death and brought a medieval empire into the modern age. Jung Chang not only records Cixi’s innovations and triumphs but also takes the reader into the depths of the splendid Summer Palace and the harem of Beijing’s Forbidden City, where she lived surrounded by Eunuchs. Jung Chang’s books have sold more than 15 million copies outside mainland China where they are banned.

She is interviewed about her career by Journalist Kate Kellaway
