The Pre-Raphaelite Dream: Art, Design and Interiors
- Where:Seminar Room One, Sackler Centre
FOUR WEEK SHORT COURSE: This course celebrates the art, ideas and lives of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Morris and other artists and models associated with Pre-Raphaelitism.
Young and idealistic, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood wanted to revolutionise Victorian art. They turned their backs on the conventions and sentimentality that was characteristic of mainstream art and championed a return to the traditions of medieval painting, the realistic depiction of nature, and subjects portraiting poetry, modern life and the fulfilment of love.
The course examines paintings, furniture and designs, and explores the history of the Pre-Raphaelitism from its origins to its later impact on J. M. Whistler and Burne-Jones.
