The South London Botanical Institute was founded in 1910 by Allan Octavian Hume, a colonial administrator who became a leader of the Indian National Congress, an ornithologist, and later in life a botanist.

From its base in a Victorian house in Tulse Hill, the institute has worked to spread an interest in plants and fungi throughout south London and beyond. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour which will include the herbarium, with more than 12,000 specimens of dried plants, and London's "most compact" botanical garden.
