Rapid Response Collecting
- What:Conferences & Symposia
- Where:The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre
SYMPOSIUM: Rapid Response is a new strand to the V&A’s collecting activity – one that is responsive to global events, situating design in immediate relation to moments of political, economic and social change.
Join us to discuss how an Ikea toy wolf, a set of Katy Perry eyelashes, a Vype e-cigarette, the mobile game Flappy Bird and an all-female LEGO set raise questions of globalisation, mass manufacture, demography and the law.
Peter Taylor, BBC journalist and author, will speak about the tobacco industry today and the changes brought about by the increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes. Alex Wiltshire will trace Flappy Bird’s journey from gaming obscurity into notoriety, right up to the release of its highly feted follow up, Swing Copters and Alex Kalman looks at how the work of the Mmuseumm – a modern natural history museum devoted to the exhibition of contemporary archaeology – intersects with Rapid Response Collecting. Introduced by Corinna Gardner, curator of contemporary product design at the V&A.
