Japanese Book Project

Japanese Book Project

I am interested in both British and non-British folklore traditions. During my final year at university I chose to illustrate three Japanese fairy tales aimed at Western children, inspired by having studied the language at school and having been to Japan twice. My aim was to use illustration as a vehicle for communication in order to make culturally specific stories more accessible to a wider audience.

I had the three stories printed as finished books for my degree show. The stories were ‘The White Hare and The Crocodiles’, ‘The Grateful Statues’ and ‘Mr. Lucky Straw’. All artwork was created using watercolour and gouache.
