My Name Is Not 'Refugee'

My Name Is Not 'Refugee'

These three images are from a picture book about a boy's experience of being a refugee. The text is a mother telling her young son what it is going to be like when they set off on a long journey to another country. The narrative avoids big political issues and the worst of refugees experience. Instead it tries to express what it is like to leave your own country and come to a different culture where the language is different and the food is different. The end is fairly positive. The young boy unpacks the things he has brought from home, starts to understand the language and make friends with children from this new place.

We won't be able to understand what people are saying to us
We might sleep in some strange places
We'll taste some new food
