St Bernard's Brandy

St Bernard's Brandy

Medical Myths
It is a myth that St Bernard dogs ever carried brandy in a barrel round their neck. However, they certainly helped people who were stuck in a snowstorm and at risk of dying of cold – but they did this by lying down next to them and keeping them warm while the storm passed by transferring their body heat to the person.

In truth, the brandy is the last thing the mountaineer should drink. It will actually make the situation worse. The idea that alcohol ‘warms’ you is likely to come from the sensation of heat as we swallow when strong alcoholic drinks are consumed. This isn’t actually warmth we are experiencing, rather just the effect of strong alcohol on the delicate lining of the gullet. If consumed in freezing temperatures, alcohol actually makes you more prone to hypothermia.
