From a series of Arthurian illustrations, the enigmatic figure of Merlin. However, we usually come across images of Merlin as an old, grey wizard, whereas I wanted to illustrate a young Merlin, who has many adventures of his own. Merlin is often associated with knowledge and wisdom, and a variety of hidden symbols are within the work to represent this theme.
I took inspiration from traditional printmaking, such as medieval woodblock prints and victorian etchings, then turned it on its head and created a double layer silkscreen print. One layer is taken from a pen and ink drawing, and the other is a monoprint and completely unique, created using guesswork and with flourishes of colour and texture to create a scene bursting with life, bringing together both the image of a British countryside and also a landscape far more fantastical than the one we're so used to.
