The Man and His Butterfly Wings

The Man and His Butterfly Wings

As part of my final project exploring the poetic potential of surrealism for my MA course, 'The Man and His Butterfly Wings' is a picture book (working in progress) on lost youth. Adopting an unusual point of view of a man in the story, instead of main characters of any little boy or girl for the kids to follow, I aimed at making a book that is not only for children, but also for teenagers and the grown-ups. The use of symbols (life footprints, wings and hat) in the images adds extra meanings to the text. Although the story looks simple and easy-to-read at the first sight, people in different age group may have different interpretation of the meaning behind. To create a natural woodland feel, images are mostly collages of different textures in various media (mainly ink, charcoal and oil pastel). With thoughtful use of empty space and image-text spacing, the overall aesthetics of the book is pure and calm.
