V&A Illustration Awards 2013: Published Category - Book Cover

Book Cover Illustration Award Winner

Pietari Posti (represented by Début Art)

Cover for Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
Published by Vintage, London, 2012

Exploring the great outdoors is a central theme in Arthur Ransome’s ‘Swallows and Amazons’ series of books, and Posti celebrates this gloriously in his illustrations, using a bold graphic treatment to give a 1930s spirit to the covers without them feeling outdated. The limited colour palette of bright orange and fresh blues helps unite the series while giving enough scope to make each cover unique.

Posti gained a degree in graphic design from Lahti University in Finland before moving to Barcelona where he works as an illustrator.

The Judges loved the strong use of colour and shape in Posti’s work and the way this created a dynamic visual theme throughout the series of books.
