Student Illustrator of the Year Award 2018

Joseph Namara Hollis

The Big City
Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge School of Art)

The playful imagery of The Big City, a self-directed picture book project, was praised for demonstrating charm and graphic sophistication in equal measure. Unplanned and guided only by a childlike sense of wonder, the joy in creating the work is evident in the detail and characterisation.

Student Runner-Up 2018

Fay Troote

The Diving Pool
Author: Yoko Ogawa
Arts University Bournemouth

For this project Fay Troote selected an intense Japanese novella set in an orphanage. Her illustrations deftly combine spontaneity and control through the considered digital layering of accidental mark-making. Following a process-led approach, ink and water drawings morphed into photographs of ink drops in water to create unexpected, unique visual forms. The judges admired the depth and subtlety of the work, finding it, mesmerising and atmospheric, and commending its consistency.

Commended Student Shortlist 2018

Alva Skog

The Explorer, The Thinker and The Leader
Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts)

Confident representations of female identity, Skog’s poster designs impressed through their technical accomplishment, distinctiveness and visual wit.

Emily Hill

The Diamond Primary School Days
The Royal School of Drawing

The naïve style of execution contradicts bravura drawing, manic and endearing as befits the subject.

Sinae Park

Author Virginia Woolf
Norwich University of the Arts

Bold yet lyrical, the design showed assurance and mature aesthetic instincts.
