We are delighted to announce our first Gilbert Collection Resident: Silvia Weidenbach who will start her residency in April and be with us until October 2017. Weidenbach is a German designer based in London. She holds an MA in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery from the Royal College of Art, London and a Diploma in Fine Art from the University of Art and Design, Burg Giebichenstein, Halle.
Silvia’s jewellery is a combination of traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing techniques and digital craft. She incorporates diamonds entirely set by hand with the latest technology, notably 3D printing and that of the haptic arm, a digital sculpting tool allowing the user to shape ‘virtual clay’ of a design.
During her residency Silvia will explore the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection. This collection celebrates some of the most beautiful objects ever made, many in precious materials, and often on a small scale. It is famous for its selection of snuffboxes made of gold and silver, highly decorated with various precious stones, enamels and mosaics. Silvia will explore these boxes and their histories in order to produce her own 21st century chest inspired by these snuffboxes.
In 2015 Silvia was announced winner of the Goldsmiths’ Fair Best New Design Award for her forward-thinking brooch collection Granny’s Chips Reloaded. Silvia has been involved in many exhibitions, most recently displaying her work in Collect 2017, and on the cover of Craft Magazine Jan/Feb 2017.
