STEPHENNIE MULDER: SAVING THE PAST FOR THE PEOPLE: A CRITIQUE OF THE “UNIVERSAL” HERITAGE MODEL

For the past six years, the world has watched in horror as Syria and Iraq have endured some of the worst human and heritage violence since World War II. In this talk, Mulder will argue that the dominant universalist model of archaeological heritage preservation, wherein heritage is envisioned as a property-based model belonging “to all humankind”, has in fact been an important motivation for the destruction of heritage in wartime and in the alienation of local communities from their heritage following reconstruction.

QSAR ES-SAÏD ART MUSEUM PROJECT: PRECOLONIAL ART IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY TUNISIA

Art Historian and Curator, Dr Ridha Moumni, presents on the formation of the newly established Qsar es-Saïd National Art Museum, Tunis; the first national museum of pre-colonial art to be established in post-revolutionary Tunisia.
Taking on the complex legacy of heritage institutions in the country; through precolonial, postcolonial and subsequently revolutionary times, Moumni explores the work taking place to transforming Qsar es-Saïd from its historic role as a ‘Palace of Forbidden Memories’ into a modern Tunisian Center for Culture and Education.
