Open Call: Digital Preservation at the V&A

January 6, 2023

We are looking for a consultant to help us learn more about our digital collections and assets and about how best to care for them into the future.

The V&A houses a permanent collection of over 2.8 million objects, books and archives that span over 5,000 years of human creativity and range from art, architecture, furniture, fashion, textiles, photography and sculpture, to painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, book arts, design, theatre and performance.

Now in the 21st century many of the objects we acquire and their methods of making are digital, as are the means by which we document and share them. As a public museum with a commitment to preserving our collections and making them accessible as broadly as possible, we need to increase our knowledge of how to do so today, and how we might continue to do so tomorrow.

Where?

Collections and corporate information are held across the family of V&A sites, including South Kensington and new and exciting opportunities for collections study and exhibition at V&A East Storehouse and Museum.

Why?

Art and design are increasingly digital, as is the way organisations such as the V&A conduct business. These digital holdings and activities need care and we require specialist insight to do this well.

We are looking for:

The V&A is seeking a consultant to audit our digital collections and corporate information, to produce a gap-analysis highlighting key risks, opportunities and priorities for the organisation and to make recommendations for digital preservation strategy, policies and procedures.

How to apply:

Please download the Preservation Services Brief. The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 31 January 2023 and interviews will be taken place in the week commencing 13 February 2023. If you have questions please contact Corinna Gardner, Senior Curator, Design and Digital at: cj.gardner@vam.ac.uk
