We have recently issued an open call for applications for a residency at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. This new residency opportunity is targeted at artists, designers and architects who wish to develop their practice in new ways by working with the Museum of Childhood’s collections and developing public engagement activities. We are particularly interested in practitioners with a socially engaged practice and welcome proposals that draw on the unique collection, architecture, history or neighbouring communities of the V&A Museum of Childhood.
A branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the mission of the V&A Museum of Childhood is to enable everyone, especially the young, to explore and enjoy the designed world, in particular objects made for and by children. Located in Bethnal Green, the Museum has a unique and important place in the history of East London and has its origins in the Victorian drive to bring culture, science and art to the urban working classes. The Museum explores the many themes of childhood past and present and its collections go from the nostalgically familiar to the utterly bizarre. It spans the seventeenth century to the present day and includes toys, games, dolls’ houses, children’s clothing and nursery furniture.
The V&A Museum of Childhood has a track record of working with artists and makers and its exhibition content is hugely varied, exploring core themes of childhood to the more subversive and darker sides of the childhood experience.
The Residency will take place between 15 November 2015 and 31 March 2016 and is open to London-based practitioners. The Museum will provide a £6,000 bursary (taxable) and an additional budget for production and materials needed for any public facing activities. The selected resident will be provided with a hot-desk and access to a computer at the V&A Museum of Childhood’s premises in Bethnal Green. A team drawn from the Museum’s staff will provide support throughout the project.
Deadline for applications: 25 September
Interview date for shortlisted candidates: 5 October

Hi Laura,
This looks like a great opportunity. Are you open to artist duos applying for this?
Many thanks.

Hello Laura,
I’m very interested in this opportunity and like Mike I wanted to know if you’re open to applications from designer/artist duos?
Many thanks.
Jon
I compiled everything and uploaded all the files but the system considers my application incomplete
Hi Laura,
I am a visual artist and I was wondering if the residency program at the V&A museum of childhood was still happening and when the next deadline was.
Enjoy summer bliss,
