An Ordered Journey

July 3, 2007

Sue Prichard, in the introduction to this blog, talks of the (artist’s) ‘journey of discovery’ and I have discussed this aspect many times in various posts. The works we make also have a journey (which in reality are likely to be longer than our own passage through life!). The installation, Order, which I first made in Gallery 101 for Concealed Discovered Revealed in June 2005 and wrote about in November of that year, extended my thinking creatively and also in considering the permanent / temporary nature of works. The next stage of Order’s journey was documented in September 2006 and now I’d like to record its final destination in the fabulous, new Haymarket Hotel, London. Order installed in the lobby of the Haymarket Hotel Back in March, a trusted team and I worked a total of 400 hours re-installing the work in the (soon to be finished) hotel foyer. This reincarnation is described in the thumbnails below. If you have a bob or two to spare ‐ it’s a great place to stay. Each new vista and room displays a bold, eclectic mix of furniture, fittings, art and objects: drawn across disciplines, from different cultures, both antique and contemporary. Bit like the V&A really… Click on the thumbnails below for larger versions.
