The 12 Days of Christmas Part 3 : Epiphany and Answers

The Twelfth Night after Christmas is traditionally the last night of yuletide celebrations. On the following day, the 6th of January, it is customary to take down the decorations and put the Christmas tree outside. In this final part of my V&A 12 Days of Christmas blog, I include details of the V&A objects included in Part 1 : A Feast of Images.

So, sadly, its time to take down the Christmas cards and decorations. But at least we can still celebrate the 6th of January with a feast of V&A images of the Epiphany:

The Twelve Days of Christmas is a traditional English carol in the form of a cumulative song. Each verse or ‘day’ from one to twelve adds a further array of birds, rings and entertainers to the parade.   By the 12th and final verse, the singer’s true love will have received 12 partridges in pear trees, 22 Turtle Doves, 30 French hens, 36 Calling birds (originally ‘colley’ birds which are blackbirds), 40 gold rings, 36 geese, 42 swans, 40 milkmaids, 36 ladies, 30 lords, 22 pipers and 12 drummers. There weren’t quite these numbers in Part 1 but at the end of this blog I’ve given a list of the V&A objects included in the collaged images.

For other V&A interpretations of The Twelve days of Christmas do also check out the V&A book ‘William Morris The Twelve days of Christmas’ illustrated by Liz Catchpole:

And also Claire Allen-Johnstone’s V&A blog illustrating the twelve days with object’s in the Museum’s Fashion and Textile collection:
