Introducing our new Virtual Reading Room Service

Access rare and unique collections without leaving your desk. We’re pleased to launch our new Virtual Reading Room (VRR) service, designed to bring the National Art Library to you – wherever you are in the world.
Through a live Microsoft Teams appointment, a member of our Library staff will guide you through your requested materials using a high-resolution camera. You’ll be able to explore items in real time, asking staff to turn pages, pause, or zoom in on specific details that matter to your research or interests. It’s a flexible, interactive way to engage with our collections when an in-person visit isn’t possible. (We are, of course, still open for on-site visits as usual!)
How it works
The service is free and open to everyone, offered on a first come, first served basis.
Once you submit a request via our online enquiry system, our team will review your selected materials. If an item is unsuitable for virtual consultation – due to fragility, format, or copyright restrictions – or if it has already been digitised and is available online, we’ll let you know in advance and help guide you to alternatives where possible.
What you need to know
- VRR sessions are available on Mondays and Fridays at 09:30 and 15:30 (excluding bank holidays and planned Library closures)
- Each session lasts up to 1 hour
- Appointments must be booked at least 7 days in advance
- You may consult up to 3 items per session
- Large-format materials (over approximately A3) may not be fully visible under the overhead camera
- Some items may not be suitable due to preservation or copyright considerations
Before you book
To make the most of your session, please come prepared with the details of the materials you’d like to view, including their title and pressmark. These can be found on the Library’s Catalogue.
If you’re not yet a registered Library member, you’ll need to create an account before booking your appointment.
Please note that VRR sessions are designed for viewing collection materials and are not consultations with subject specialists. If you’re seeking expert guidance or in-depth research support, we recommend contacting the Library separately.
