We’re incredibly excited to be curating an exhibition on the colourful and dynamic popular culture of South Korea in Hallyu! The Korean Wave, which opens in September this year.

Rising to prominence in the late 1990s, the first tides of Hallyu, meaning ‘Korean Wave’, rippled across Asia before becoming a worldwide phenomenon that challenges the currents of global pop culture today. The exhibition will explore the makings of the Korean Wave through the lens of cinema, drama, music, fandom, beauty and fashion.

CALL-OUT

We’re launching a public call-out for K-Pop banners, to help highlight the vital role that fandoms play in the phenomenon of K-Pop. The chosen banners – alongside the personal stories behind them – will be showcased in our exhibition, allowing thousands of visitors to see the depth of creativity involved in their production. We’d love the chosen banners to become part of the V&A’s permanent collection, providing inspiration to others in the future! We’re looking for banners that are over 80cm high, and under 420cm long.

Please send us a photograph of your K-Pop banner, along with a short description of it (around 100 words). Your description could include the following:

  • How was it made?
  • What do the designs mean?
  • Why did you make it and what for?
  • Why are you a fan of the band your banner is dedicated to?

We’ll be in contact to arrange next steps, including postage, once we’ve chosen the submissions we’d like to include in the exhibition.

Email us at hallyu@vam.ac.uk with your submission. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2022.

We can only accept banner submissions from the UK and Europe due to postage and timing restraints. For world-wide fans – we’ll also be highlighting the importance of K-Pop online during the exhibition run, so keep a look out for any further announcements.

Keep an eye on our website or follow us on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube to hear more about the exhibition, opening 24 September 2022, V&A South Kensington.
