We relaunch vam.ac.uk today and we know \u2013 and hope \u2013 that there\u2019ll be lots of questions about the new website. In the meantime, we wanted to give you an overview of what we\u2019ve done and why.<\/p>\n

Why have we overhauled the website?<\/h2>\n

It was time to rethink the V&A’s digital presence. Our website was five years old.<\/p>\n

We want our website to bring the V&A to life online. We want to open up the Museum\u2019s collections, exhibitions, events, people, activities, ideas and experiences. We want our digital experiences to live up to the V&A\u2019s physical presence\u00a0as a vibrant, active, continually changing place. So it was time for change.<\/p>\n

What do we hope to achieve with the new website?<\/h2>\n

We want to inspire more people to visit<\/em>. Our aspiration is to offer a seamless transition from browsing your\u00a0iPad on the sofa at home, or searching on your\u00a0desktop at work to turning up to visit the Museum. So the\u00a0goal for this phase of our digital transformation\u00a0is to\u00a0turn\u00a0more of the 14.5 million visits to our website each year into visits to\u00a0the\u00a0Museum.<\/p>\n

We also want\u00a0to define the V&A brand online<\/em>. We want to do justice to\u00a0the\u00a0collections,\u00a0the galleries\u00a0and the people that make the V&A so unique. We now\u00a0use much larger, richer imagery, so there is\u00a0a\u00a0better balance between text and image. There is a bolder use of the brand and logo. And these\u00a0all make for\u00a0a more cohesive experience across digital and print.<\/p>\n

It’s not a refresh, it’s a rebuild<\/em>. We’ve created\u00a0a\u00a0new editorial tool (a content management system) and a new website from scratch. The new site has been built by the V&A\u2019s Digital Media team\u00a0with product innovation consultancy Made by Many\u00a0using open source software (Ruby on Rails). That means we now have the freedom to choose\u00a0what features we build, and when.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s new?<\/h2>\n

But we’re not\u00a0rebuilding the entire website. We’re starting on a focussed number of pages, and we’ll build out quickly. So the old website and the new will co-exist\u00a0for a while.<\/p>\n
