{"id":34575,"date":"2017-05-03T11:38:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T10:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=34575"},"modified":"2017-05-03T11:38:14","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T10:38:14","slug":"design-archives-online-and-the-plastics-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/blog\/news\/design-archives-online-and-the-plastics-age","title":{"rendered":"Design Archives Online and the Plastics Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Ruth de Wynter, Project Assistant, Design Archives Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the pleasures of working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/blog\/tag\/jewish-emigre-designers\">Jewish \u00e9migr\u00e9 designers<\/a> project has been exploring the wonderful array of work they produced across disciplines and \u00a0threads and themes that emerge; they may have been friends or colleagues (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC61150\" target=\"_blank\">Hermann Hecht<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC107512\">Hans Schleger\u2019s<\/a> assistant and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC106102\">Jacques Groag<\/a> worked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC61701\">Franz Singer<\/a> in pre-war Vienna), worked for the same clients (such as the GPO) or supported their fellow <em>\u00e9migr\u00e9s<\/em>\u2019 work (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC106376\">Jacqueline Groag<\/a> had designs commissioned by both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC107412\">Gaby Schreiber<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC39522\">Misha Black<\/a>). Several featured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC73029\">Britain Can Make It<\/a> exhibition here at the V&amp;A in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>A number of our designers also worked either directly or indirectly with that now ubiquitous material; plastic. Days into WW2 she met fellow \u00e9migr\u00e9 (and future husband) Bill Fischbein, who had sought UK refuge after the forcible Aryanisation of his Berlin ceramics firm. He became managing director of Runcolite, which pioneered plastics use in wartime military and aviation, as well as in consumer goods. With Runcolite Schreiber launched her career as the \u2018Plastics Queen of England\u2019. Setting aside self-professed disdain for the material she embraced its design possibilities and created a wide range of domestic and export consumer homewares as well as pioneering plastic-cased kitchens in pastel colours. AAD\/1991\/11\/5\/4\/4. \u00a9 Victoria and Albert Museum, London\/estate of Gaby Schreiber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/archives\/unit\/ARC58758\">Ernest Sanger<\/a> emigrated to Britain in 1938 he set up the Pilot Waterproof Co. Ltd, \u2018makers of novelty waterproofs.\u2019 \u00a0With a lack of rubber supplies, Pilot turned to ICI Plastics and the emergence of flexible materials to produce transparent waterproof coats, with hopes for a strong export market. However, Terylene\u2019s place of production, the ICI Wilton plant on Teesside (opened in 1950) lives on as a visual icon.
