The winners of the V&A Illustration Awards 2019 were announced during the awards ceremony yesterday evening and\u00a0Nora Krug<\/strong> was named the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year<\/strong>. Her work, alongside the award winning artworks from each of the four categories and the commended student shortlist, will be displayed at the V&A from today until Sunday 25 August 2019.<\/p>\n

The winners<\/h1>\n

Book Illustration Award: Nora Krug<\/a> for\u00a0Heimat\u00a0<\/em>(Particular Books)<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"Heimat\"<\/p>\n

Krug\u2019s book on the lives of her German family members under the Nazi regime explores notions of identity and home. The judges praised her decision to blend almost childlike illustrations alongside photographs of her family and life in Germany during WWII. It was commended by the judges as brave and unique, for offering a new perspective on a sensitive, complex and painful subject.<\/p>\n

Illustrated Journalism Award: A. Richard Allen<\/a> for\u00a0Experts\u00a0<\/em>(The Sunday Telegraph)<\/h4>\n

\"Experts\"<\/p>\n

Allen’s illustration for the article \u2018My Lawyer was so bad I did the work myself\u2019 (The Sunday Telegraph) was seen as a perfect example of classic illustration. The judges said, \u201cThe \u2018Money\u2019 section of a paper is notoriously difficult to make interesting, but this made you want to read the article \u2013 even though the illustration actually told the whole story of the piece! Part of the difficulty of illustration is tricking the viewer into looking at the image for longer than a few seconds but this image kept your attention with all the clever details and directions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Book Cover Design Award: Yehrin Tong<\/a> for\u00a0Their Eyes Were Watching God\u00a0<\/em>(Virago)<\/h4>\n

\"Their<\/p>\n

The judges felt this was a luscious, evocative and appealing cover that made you want to pick up the book and buy it. They said, \u201cIt was so beautiful that you would be proud to be seen walking around with it and reading it.”\u00a0Their Eyes Were Watching God<\/em> is one of thirteen books published\u00a0to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Virago, a publishing firm that champions women writers. The covers were designed by\u00a0Tong alongside Hannah Wood, Art Director at Virago\u00a0and Donna Coonan, Editorial Director at Virago.<\/p>\n

Student Illustrator of the Year: Sophie Burrows<\/a>\u00a0(Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge School of Art) for\u00a0Crushing\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n

\"Crushing\"<\/p>\n

Burrows tender illustrations in graphic novel format are both darkly amusing and wryly observed. Her shrewd use of just two colours conjures a quirky dreamlike atmosphere as well as evoking the essential loneliness of the central character.<\/p>\n

Student Runner-Up: Yanyin Xu<\/a>\u00a0(<\/strong>University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts) for\u00a0One by One<\/em><\/h4>\n

\"One<\/p>\n

Yanyin\u2019s thoughtful and imaginative manipulation of traditional book formats were particularly engaging.\u00a0One by One<\/em> images are sculptural and atmospheric. The characters contort like curling paper in inexorable mazes and confined enclosures.<\/p>\n

Junli Song<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge School of Art) for\u00a0Dance<\/em>
\nYing Wang<\/a>\u00a0(<\/strong>University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts) for\u00a0Food Journey in London<\/em>
\nHarry Woodgate<\/strong><\/a> (University of Hertfordshire) for\u00a0Invisible Cities<\/em><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s winners were whittled down from almost a thousand entries. The judging panel for the published categories was made up\u00a0of\u00a0Olivia Ahmad<\/strong>, Curator at the House of Illustration and Editor of Varoom Magazine, Nicholas Coleridge<\/strong>, Chairman of the V&A Trustees and Chairman of Cond\u00e9 Nast and Jessica Voorsanger<\/strong>, Artist and Academic. <\/span><\/span>The judges for the student award were\u00a0Suzanne Dean<\/strong>, Creative Director at Vintage, Penguin Random House and Book Cover Winner 2018 and Cat O\u2019Neil<\/strong><\/a>, Illustrator and Editorial Winner 2018. Each category winner receives \u00a33,000, and Nora Krug also receives the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Prize of \u00a35,000. The student runner-up is awarded \u00a32,000.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
