A Tale of Two Cities: the 'Jutopolises' of Empire
Join Bashabi Fraser to explore the story of jute in two cities of Empire
Bashabi will consider the role that this durable fabric and skein played in the economic and colonial histories of Dundee and Calcutta. From exploring jute’s journey via the rivers of each nation - the Tay and the Hoogly, to reflecting on its influence on contemporary design and its potential as a material in a world threatened by climate crises; Bashabi will examine the history and possibility of jute.
Dr Bashabi Fraser, CBE, Professor Emerita of English and Creative Writing, and Director of the Scottish Centre of Tagore Studies (ScoTs) at Edinburgh Napier University. Bashabi Fraser is a member of V&A Dundee’s Scottish Design Galleries Advisory Group.
This event will be BSL interpreted, live.
