From the Tay to the Hooghly river
Join Bashabi Fraser to explore the story of jute in two cities of Empire: Dundee and Calcutta. Bashabi will consider how this durable fabric and skein wove the economic and colonial histories of these two port cities.
Bashabi will examine jute – from its journey across the Tay and the Hoogly, the rivers of each nation, to its influence on contemporary design and its potential as a material in a world threatened by climate crises.
Bashabi Fraser, Professor Emerita of English and Creative Writing, and Director of the Scottish Centre of Tagore Studies (ScoTs) at Edinburgh Napier University. Bashabi Fraser is a member of V&A Dundee’s Scottish Design Galleries Advisory Group.
This event will be BSL interpreted, live.
